Ulvi Tahirov has been Deputy Director of Baku Journalism School since 2005. The school provided training and implemented educational projects for young journalists.  

On December 6, 2024, the Azerbaijani authorities arrested Tahirov at his home under charges of conspiring to smuggle foreign currency into the country. According to the reports, the law enforcement officers held him overnight at the police station and interrogated him without the presence of his lawyer.

Authorities arrested five Meydan TV journalists on the same charges that day.    

On December 8, 2024, the Khatai District Court ordered Tahirov to spend four months in pre-trial detention.
