Aynur Ganbarova (Elgunesh) is a journalist serving as editor-in-chief for the Berlin-based media outlet, Meydan TV. Prior to her arrest, she covered social issues, human rights, domestic violence, and the rights of the child. Ganbarova preiviously worked for a newspaper Daily Azerbaijan (Gundelik Azerbaijan).
On December 6, 2024, the Baku Main Police Department arrested Ganbarova on charges of conspiring to smuggle foreign currency. Law enforcement officers also searched her home address. Allegedly, police physically mistreated Ganbarova to obtain her electronic devices , held her overnight at the police station, and interrogated her without the presence of her lawyer.
Authorities arrested five other Meydan TV journalists and the Deputy Head of Baku Journalism School on the same charges that day.
On December 8, 2024, the Khatai District Court ordered Ganbarova to spend four months in pre-trial detention.
